SCENE CITY | Mindanao Lions Clubs extend a helping hand

IT IS during the time of disasters and calamities affecting our less fortunate communities that our desire to help and serve our neighbor is best felt and awakens our spirit of charity.

The Lions Clubs International District 301 E (Mindanao) has been very active in responding to the needs of the Typhoon Odette hit areas. Surigao City was one of the badly affected areas. The donated relief goods were initially distributed on December 21, 2021, and still continue to pour in.

On Jan. 8, 2022, members from Davao City Mt. Talomo Lions Club, headed by Club President & District Cabinet Treasurer Johnny Ang Te, Zamboanga City Host headed by Region Chairperson Amado Angeles, District Global Service Team Coordinator Dr. Veronica T. Magaway, joined District Governor of LCI 301E Charles Darwin Y. Javellana in the distribution of donated relief goods in Surigao City.

The group was able to visit the Municipality of Tagana-an, and turned over water-filled gallon containers, rice, food packs consisting of canned goods, noodles, powdered milk, coffee, empty water containers, Ponkan oranges, and mats to Mayor Cesar B. Diaz, Jr.

The Davao City Mt. Talomo Lions Club was assisted by the municipal mayor in going to barangays Fabio and Libas by riding motorboats in order to reach the hundreds of affected families who were eagerly waiting for the relief goods. The Lions Clubs International District 301E, to this date, still continues to distribute food packs to different typhoon-affected areas in Surigao Del Norte.

The series of donations for the typhoon Odette calamity in Surigao City and other nearby places was also headed by the governor of district 301-E Philippines, Charles Darwin, William To, 1st Vice Governor, Benny Amboayan, 2nd Vice Governor; cabinet treasurer and president of DC Mt.Talomo Lions Club, Peter Wee, region chair, Joselyn Yee region chair; and Allan Sanidad, past district governor. Officers and members of different Lions Clubs in Mindanao have been working together soliciting donations from Lions Club members and private individuals who have generous hearts and serve thousands of families in the Caraga region. District 301-E is preparing for another wave of donation and a medical mission for the month of February 2022.
