Unable to join groups producing and donating masks for distribution during the period of Enhanced Community Quarantine, just like what some organizations are doing, 2019 Hiyas ng Kadayawan Nurainie Ampatuan tries her best to use leftover Inaul fabrics to design fashionable face masks. Inaul is the woven fabric which is the pride of Maguindanao widely used for Malong, but lately has turned into a designer’s favorite fashionable attire for men and women. Nurainie comes from Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao and lives in Davao City.
Nurainie’s intention in making fancy masks is not so much for promoting her designs, being a Freelance Fashion Designer and Creative Director of Hilyah, but for health awareness, to be an advocate in making people realize the importance of using a face mask in this crucial period of the Corona19 Pandemic. She was unable to give away masks due to lack of available materials during the ECQ because she says, masks need to have a filter and other requirements to make them “completely fancy surgical masks”. She says she used charcoal surgical masks and patched the Inaul onto the mask and added ornamental beads. The fabrics she used to sew the masks are leftover pieces from previous projects.
It so happens that she has a talent for sewing, owns a sewing machine and is a fashion designer herself.
Nurainie also gives credit to her good friend Steffy de Mylo (Steffy Misoles –Dacalus), a well-known Fashion Designer from Davao City who made masks out of Inaul fabrics, worn by Dr. Ricardo Audan Chief of Clinics, SPMC, Dr. Eleonor Concha – Chief Training Officer at SPMC and Dr. Rozaly Reyes –Mauro, Chief Resident – emergency medicine.
Nurainie is a former Fashion Exhibitor of Fashion Weekend Davao,Former influencer at Jakarta Modest Fashion Week. She graduated Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Fashion Design from the Philippine Women’s College of Davao.
Steffy de Mylo is a Former Fashion Designer at Ezzeya Fashion House Corporation in Davao City and studied at the Ateneo de Davao University.
