The proposed ordinance banning single-used plastic in the city will not include products in sachets, the councilor who pushes for the proposal admitted.
While sachets “do really contribute to the garbage in the city,” Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, Jr. said the business sectors will greatly be affected with the inclusion of sachets.
The Mahipus-led committee on environment is currently conducting the committee hearing.
Mahipus, Jr. said they are expecting the business sector to join in the next committee hearing. They conducted the first committee hearing two weeks ago.
“We wanted to hear the sides of the business sectors. We wanted to hear from them so that later on, they can help us implement (the ordinance once approved),” Mahipus said.
The councilor said he wanted to invite recyclers in the next committee hearing to check if compostable plastic waste could be feasible for recycling.
While 80 percent of the committee hearing is already done, Mahipus said he could not assure to pass the committee report to the City Council for approval before the year ends.
“Once approved in the City Council, we will forward this ordinance immediately to the City Legal Office and the City Mayor’s Office to review its provisions,” he added.
