Rotary Club hands over 40 wheelchairs to school kids

THE ROTARY Club of Downtown Davao (RCDD) distributed 40 wheelchairs for the children with disabilities identified by the Department of Education XI at the Davao City National High School on May 2.

Of the 70 or more children with disabilities from various schools, DepEd only selected 40 children for the turnover ceremony.

Rozanne “Twinkle” C. Gamboa, district governor of Rotary International District 3860, delivered her opening remarks at Rotary’s Gift of Mobility for Learners with Disability event. She hoped the donation would empower the children with mobility in education and make them feel welcome in communities.

“These wheelchairs symbolize our commitment to supporting your educational endeavors and creating a more inclusive and accessible learning environment,” she said.

Most of the children were diagnosed with orthopedic impairment, cerebral palsy, and other multiple disabilities.

During an interview, Gamabao said each wheelchair costs P5,500. She also added they have a total of 54 wheelchairs with 40 for the DepEd beneficiaries, eight for Hope Haven International beneficiaries from Digos City, and six for three hospitals (Provincial Hospital Maragusan, Marilog District Hospital, Davao Del Norte Hospital Igacos Zone) in Davao Region.

Gamboa also shared that they had begun carrying out programs in 2019 where they had turned over 10 wheelchairs of the identified beneficiaries in the communities of barangay Calinan.
