RENE GONZALES Unviels “Etched In Soul”

Last January 17, 2025, Davao based visual artist Rene Gonzales debuted his much anticipated first solo art exhibit, Etched in Soul, at La Herencia Davao. The intimate art exhibit featured an evocative collection of more that 20 artworks, each a profound exploration of identity of our indigenous people thru the eyes of the artist.

The exhibit drew art enthusiasts, collectors and supporters of Davao arts who were captivated by Gonzales’ art style and narratives. A licensed architect, Rene known for his intricate detailing, Gonzales’ works reflects a blend of contemporary and traditional influence, paying homage to the local indigenous people’s culture.

Gonzales shared, “This exhibit is not just a display of art but a journey of self-discovery. Each stroke tells a story, each color evokes a feeling, and I hope it resonates deeply with everyone who experiences it.”

A standout feature of the exhibit was a series of portraits of indigenous women, where Gonzales celebrated their strength, grace, and cultural significance. The model for these striking pieces was none other than his daughter, Kat, who brought a personal and intimate dimension to the works. Gonzales shared, “Using Kat as the model for these portraits felt natural. Through her, I could channel the dignity and spirit of our indigenous communities, making each piece both personal and symbolic.”

Notably, Etched In Soul marks Gonzales’ artistic transition from the traditional brush to the palette knife. This shift brought a dynamic texture and depth to his pieces, creating an interplay of light and shadow that added a tactile dimension to his storytelling. The palette knife technique allowed him to emphasize raw emotion, with thick bold strokes and layered textures echoing even more the visibility of the glow of the art itself.

Etched in Soul marks a significant milestone for Rene Gonzales as he establishes himself as a promising rising star in the Davao art scene. The exhibit not only celebrated his artistry but also underscored the transformative power of art to connect, inspire, and heal.

The exhibit runs until Feb. 2, 2025.
