PSA to strengthen statistical data gathering

THE PHILIPPINES Statistics Authority launched the 2024 Census Population and Community-Based Monitoring System (POPCEN-CBMS) for comprehensive data gathering and sustainable community development.

During the regional press launch at Acacia Hotel on July 12, PSA RSSO XI supervising statistical specialist Ma. Leah C. Magracia highlighted the importance of PSA’s 2024 POPCEN-CBMS under Bagong Pilipinas to update the total population and the list of government social protection program beneficiaries to be streamlined, and to manage the efficient use of government resources.

2024 POPCEN-CBMS will provide information on the shares of LGUs in the National Tax Allocation as well as to aid the implementation of the Republic Act No. 11964, also known as the “Automatic Income Classification of Local Government Units Act” recently signed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on October 26, 2023.

In Magracia’s presentation, 3,803 enumerators will be deployed in 48 cities and municipalities in Davao Region from July 15 until Sept. 16.

Davao City will fund the CBMS implementation based on the agreement signed with PSA last June 25.

DILG XI regional director Abdullah V. Matalam delivered his message of support for the 2024 POPCEN-CBMS. He said it is not only a statistical exercise but a vital tool to empower people to make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently, and implement programs that directly address community needs. DILG will also support the POPCEN-CBMS as it serves as a foundation for effective governance.

“So, the data that is being collected will provide us invaluable insights into the demographic, social, and economic conditions of our people. So it will enable us to craft policies that are responsive and inclusive,” Matalam said.

The 2024 POPCEN-CBMS is also closely aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG),  an important tool in tracking the progress in achieving global targets.

The launch of this initiative is in line with RA 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistics Act of 2013, Executive Order 352, and RA 11315, CBMS Act of 2019. Failure to cooperate with statistical inquiries or refusal to provide accurate information may result in imprisonment of one year and a fine of P100,000.
