Police arrest ‘cult member’ wanted for slay, mutilation

An alleged suspect in the brutal killing and mutilation of a farmer in Danao City last January was arrested in Guadalupe, Barangay Matina Crossing, Talomo District around 5 p.m. on Friday.

The suspect was identified as  Jonas Martel Bueno who was served the arrest warrant for murder by the authorities.

Chief Insp. Milgrace Driz,  the head of Criminal Investigation Detection Group (CIDG)-Davao City Field Unit (DCFU), said that the warrant was served by the joint elements of the Mindanao Area Intelligence  Office (Mapio), led by Supt. Vianney Ross Lagundi, National Bureau of Investigation led by Jonathan Balete, Regional Intelligence Unit led by Chief Insp. Deane Benjie Santos,  Talomo Police Station  led by Chief Insp. Ronald L. Lao.

Bueno was also tagged in the raping and mutilation of Christine Lee Silawan, a 16-year-old high school student, last weekend in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. However, this could not be confirmed as yet.

Bueno’s brothers Junry and Jovy, who were suspects in the brutal killing of the farmer, were killed while Danao City policemen were trying to arrest them last Jan. 18. Jonas escaped that operation.

There were reports in Danao that they were members of a cult that eats the flesh of their victims in a ritual.

Driz said Bueno was arrested for murder with court case no. DNO-8968 issued in Danao City Cebu Branch 25 signed by Judge Jerry B. Dicdican.

“The suspect used Jason Martil on FB (Facebook) and an informant tipped us, they have the same facial features,” Driz said.

Earlier, President Duterte has ordered a manhunt on the suspects in the murder of Silawan. A bounty of about P1.8 million has been put up for anyone who could provide information leading to their arrest.

Silawan’s body was found half-naked in a vacant lot in Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Bangkal in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Half of the teenager’s face was skinned to the skull and her body had multiple stab wounds. Police earlier said there were at least three suspects in the killing of the student.

The victim was a student of Maribago High School and was first reported missing by her mother after she failed to return home from serving as a collector in church on Sunday evening.

In a report, tracker teams from the Lapu-Lapu City and Danao City police are scouring the mountainous terrain of Sogod town where one of the suspects in the Silawan murder – identified as Jonas Bueno – and two other companions were last seen by informants.
