Pedestrian killed in motorbike mishap involving police officer

A 56-YEAR-OLD pedestrian was killed by a motorcycle driven by an off-duty police officer at the Davao-Bukidnon Road, in Barangay Sto. Niño, Tugbok District around 10 p.m. on Friday, March 22.

Police identified him as Nolito Pielago Ambat, married, self-employed, and a resident of New Loon, Barangay Mintal.

Meanwhile, the officer was identified as Ian Franco Behinia Phala, 39, a resident of Green Meadows, Barangay Sto Nino, who was then traveling with his wife, Julian Phala, 38, also a police officer, on board a Vespa Sprint 150.

According to initial reports,  Ambat was crossing the national road when the incident occurred. The impact threw both the pedestrian and the two cops onto the concrete road.

Barangay Sto Niño rescuers immediately administered first aid before transporting Ambat to the Southern Philippines Medical Center. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The officer and his wife were also taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The motorcycle involved in the accident is currently impounded at the Tugbok Police Station.

“The investigation into the motorcycle accident involving a police officer on Friday, March 22, is ongoing,” according to Captain Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).

“Reckless imprudence resulting in homicide is a potential charge that may be filed, depending on the findings of the investigation,” Tuazon added.
