PCG  recovers carcass of Cuvier’s beaked whale at Sta. Ana Wharf

THE PHILIPPINE Coast Guard (PCG) recovered the carcass of a Cuvier’s beaked whale near Pier 1, Sta. Ana Wharf, Davao City, on Feb. 22, 2025.

Personnel from Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Sta. Ana responded to a report from a concerned citizen at approximately 3 p.m. regarding a deceased whale floating in the area.

Coast Guard personnel from CGSS Sta. Ana, in coordination with Coast Guard Station (CGS) Davao, Coast Guard Intelligence Unit personnel, and the Maritime Police Davao, immediately proceeded to the scene. They secured the vicinity and coordinated with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for further assessment and proper disposal of the carcass.

At 5:20 p.m., Dr. Rogelio Gukotano, a BFAR veterinary marine mammal specialist, confirmed the carcass to be that of a Cuvier’s beaked whale. The whale measured 17.3 feet long, 8.4 feet wide, and weighed around 700 kilograms.

The cause of death remains undetermined and will require further examination by BFAR.

The Philippine Coast Guard emphasized its commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection, working closely with relevant agencies to address incidents involving marine life.
