Overwhelming trust

THE UNIVERSITY of Mindanao-Institute of Popular Opinion (UM-IPO) survey revealed that 9 in 10 Davaoeños still wanted former President Rodrigo Duterte (FPRRD) to gun for public office.

Meanwhile, 4.2% opposed the idea, while 7.9% remained neutral.

Of the total, 47.7% of Davaoeños wanted him as vice president, 37% wanted him to return as mayor, 12.2% believed he could run in the Senate, and 3.2% in the House of Representatives.

On the other hand, Davaoeños opposed the idea because of “the trust in his word not to seek any public office again, advice on seeking retirement and living a private life, and concerns of his old age and health, among others.”

In terms of his recent issues with the House of Representatives and the suspension of his media network, more than 4 in 10 (47.3%) believed it as unfair and unjust, 26.1% expressed neutrality as they wait for more facts, 13.9% saw it as fair and justifiable, and 12.6% of the respondents had no idea about the rift between the HOR and Duterte.

Results also revealed that 89.3% of Davaoeños expressed much trust in FPRRD’s performance, while 10.1% expressed “slight trust” in him.

Meanwhile, 76.9% of Davaoeños have seen FPRRD’s performance in his term as “very good,” 16.1% said it was “good,” and 4.7% of the respondents saw it as moderate or average.

The survey noted that the “overwhelming trust and positive performance evaluation point to Duterte’s lasting legacy in Davao City signals that his policies and governance style resonates well with a significant portion of the population.”

However, it also stressed that the desire for his continued political engagement “must be balanced with considerations of legal, ethical, and health-related concerns raised by his critics.”

The UM-IPO survey conducted a comprehensive survey from Jan. 25 to Feb. 10, 2024, and targeted 1,200 households across Davao City’s three political districts.
