New weather station to be put up in Digos

DIGOS City Hall and Pagasa signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on Sep. 19 to put up a dedicated weather station to intensify local disaster risk reduction and enhance the agency’s warning and monitoring services.

The station will be situated in Barangay Igpit, Digos City with an allocated lot of 3,000 square meters.

Pagasa administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando said the station is part of the ten new outposts nationwide from the P110 million funds of Senator Francios Tolentino.

Citing the change in weather patterns, Servando said the station will enhance the bureau’s real-time collection of data to deliver more accurate information and better prepare the local government to protect residents.

Also, students can use the information gathered from the weather station for agricultural studies or research works regarding health and even home applications.

The onslaught of typhoons Sendong, Pablo, and Odette on Mindanao paved the way for the weather bureau to establish more stations in Mindanao.

Four weather stations are in Digos City in Davao del Sur, Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur, Kabacan in  North Cotabato, and Lamitan in Basilan. The Digos station will also prioritize local residents in the hiring process.
