NCIP to empower Indigenous communities of Region XI

BY GIO J. TANUDTANUD

THE NATIONAL Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) XI will continue to carry out programs and efforts to support the indigenous communities in the ancestral domain of Davao Region.

On Wednesday’s Habi at Kape in Abreeza Ayala Malls, Atty. Geroncio R. Aguio, NCIP XI regional director, said they are committed to protecting and promoting the interest of the Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) within their respective ancestral domains.

The programs introduced and proposed by NCIP will benefit the IP communities as well as implement policies to improve the ancestral domain

The major programs to be implemented are the Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title delineation, IP Wealth Management, and the Community Resource Management Development Fund Program (CRMDP).

These main programs will grant recognition and rights of ownership of land in the ancestral domain through titles for the IP communities. It will also help them manage their wealth and craft budgets for development plans with a portion to be reserved for the next generation.

Aguio said the IP Wealth Management program will allocate the funds for the next generation of development plans, especially on domain resources like minerals.

“There should be an allocation for the next generation to be reserved also for their development. So, yun ang pinaka component ng IP wealth development plan na that will be regulated by NCIP but controlled by the indigenous political structures of every IP community,” he said.
