MinDA eyes to create Mindanao Resiliency Resource Center

THE MINDANAO Development Authority (MinDA) will pass a resolution urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to establish a resiliency resource center.

During the Mindanao Development Forum press briefing on July 24, MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno said this will further address the challenges brought by climate change in Mindanao.

“We are encouraging the national government to support our Mindanao resiliency program. Luzon and Visayas already have such centers, but we do not have one yet in Mindanao,” Magno said.

Magno said that they are also in discussion with Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Yulo Loyzaga, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian, and Misamis Oriental 2nd District Rep. Yevgeny Beja-Emano for the concept of the said project.

He stressed that this will address the climate challenge in Mindanao, as the study shows that the island has been experiencing unusual amounts of rainfall.

“We have experienced a 50% increase in rainfall volume in Mindanao, leading to an unprecedented number of disasters,” he said.

He said a concept paper for such a center will be completed next month, following the creation of the resolution.

He also hoped that the project facility would receive funding from various sources, including DSWD and the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).

“It will be a one-stop shop to address our needs during disasters,” he added.
