Medical specialists advocate vs. teen pregnancy

THE PHILIPPINE Obstetrical and Gynecological Society-Southern Mindanao chapter (POGS-SMC) intensified the programs against teenage pregnancy, this was according to the progressively increasing trend of the annual census data last year in Southern Philippines Medical Center.

Speaking in last week’s AFP-PNP press briefing held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Dr. Maria Camella Grace Delos Reyes, fellow POGS-SMC, said mostly housemaids and teenagers aged 10 years old who got pregnant [easily].

“[They have] to be educated more because they are thinking individuals and we should not take them as children anymore because they have an identity and they are very smart,” Delos Reyes said.

Delos Reyes urged the private sector to encourage the youth to turn to doctors for free visits and consultations. She said its purpose is to make the youth aware of family planning and understand [about] abuse and other aspects of life.

In addition, there will be a celebration of the 20th National Pregnancy Day in a mall in Bajada where there will be free registration so they can participate in lectures about violence against women and children and other activities during the event.

Moreover, the same activity is done annually in various places in Southern Mindanao to celebrate National Women’s Month.
