Mayor Duterte urges calm amid political turmoil

MAYOR Sebastian Duterte is calling for calm and democratic solutions amidst recent events that have shaken the city.

“It’s clear what’s happening. Let’s just wait. I prefer that we still go through the democratic process and not resort to violence. We are still a democracy,” the mayor said in a briefing with the media on Friday.

He urged Davaoeños to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections. “Let’s wait for the elections and use our votes wisely,” he said.

“That’s the only way. We don’t want chaos, we don’t want to resort to violence or guns,” he further said.

His comments come after a series of rapid changes within the Davao City Police Office, including the replacement of three city directors in a single day and the reassignment of 19 station commanders.

“As I’ve told the people of Davao, keep working hard. Your taxes will still be used for the benefit of those in need, including social services,” he reassured residents.

When asked why the Duterte family seems to be targeted, the Mayor responded, “I don’t want to answer that because it’s subjective. Look at the political climate. Look at what the administration is doing.”

He acknowledged that the recent “Maisug” rally, a protest against the national government, was particularly heated in Davao City.

He speculated that this might be due to Vice President Sara Duterte, who hails from Davao, holding the second-highest position in the country.

“Usually, people in politics want their people to run, be appointed, or win. It’s natural, anywhere in the world,” he said.

When asked about his views on the current government, Mayor Duterte said, “Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t understand because I had a good impression of it at the start.”
