Malacañang denies impeachment push against VP Duterte

MALACAÑANG on Wednesday refuted claims that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is actively pursuing an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte in the Senate.

During a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro addressed questions about the administration’s confidence in impeaching the vice president, considering the incoming Senate composition after the 2025 midterm elections.

“There is no truth to reports that the President is pursuing impeachment or an impeachment trial against VP Sara. We categorically deny these claims,” Castro stated.

She further clarified, “We have not issued any statement expressing confidence that the Vice President will be removed from office.”

The strained relationship between President Marcos and Duterte, who were running mates in the 2022 elections, fully fractured in the lead-up to the 2025 mid-term elections.

Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on Feb. 5, 2025, with over 200 congressmen endorsing the complaint.

The impeachment complaint cites accusations of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes.
