DEPUTY Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Party-List Rep. France Castro pumped her fist in the air while Akbayan Party-List Rep. Perci Cendaña clapped in approval after the House of Representatives officially impeached Vice President Duterte during the resumption of its season on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025.
Cendaña and Castro, alongside House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Party-List Rep. Arlene Brosas and Kabataan Party-List Rep. Raoul Manuel of the Makabayan Bloc, were among the solons who endorsed the first and second impeachment complaints against Duterte.
Duterte’s impeachment was formalized after 215 lawmakers endorsed a fourth impeachment complaint, which was approved by Speaker Martin Romualdez, effectively fast-tracking the process.
The complaint cited betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, and other high crimes as the grounds for impeachment.
The case will now be transmitted to the Senate where Senators, standing as judges, shall convene as an impeachment court to either convict or acquit VP Sara.
If convicted, she would be removed from the top post and disqualified from holding any public office in the future.
