THE JOINT Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict in the Davao Region (JRTF 11-ELCAC) is gearing up to strengthen its strategic communication (stratcom) cluster to counter fake news and highlight Mindanao’s progress.
Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chairperson and JRTF 11-ELCAC chair, emphasized the need for proactive efforts during the task force’s Quarter 4 meeting held recently in Davao City.
“We, in the government, must take corrective measures to combat fake news and ensure the public has access to the truth,” Secretary Magno said.
He stressed that revitalizing the stratcom cluster will enable the government to better share success stories and development milestones in Mindanao.
“Our ultimate goal is to deliver accurate and reliable news to the people,” he added.
Philippine Information Agency (PIA) regional director Rene Carbayas welcomed the initiative, noting its significance in advancing the government’s fight against communist armed conflict.
“This initiative is a much-needed boost for PIA, especially with our limited resources. It strengthens our ability to deliver impactful communication efforts,” Carbayas said.
He highlighted the cluster’s crucial role in sustaining peace and progress in the region.
“As we transition to transforming the lives of former rebels, the strategic communication cluster will ensure continued support for government programs so that those we’ve rescued will not return to armed struggle.”
During the meeting, the PIA presented its 2024 stratcom efforts, which include:
- Countering propaganda by communist terrorist groups (CTGs) in both international and local spheres,
- Promoting good governance and key government programs in priority CTG-affected communities,
- Enhancing youth engagement and private media capacities, among others.
These initiatives aim to uphold the region’s peace gains and foster sustainable development in Mindanao.
The JRTF 11-ELCAC remains committed to its mission of ending insurgency and building a stable, progressive Mindanao through truthful communication and collaborative efforts.
