Improvised pyrotechnics

EIGHT improvised cannons, locally known as lantaka or boga, were seized by the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, 2024.

The operation occurred along the stretch of the ongoing construction of the Davao City Coastal Road in Barangay 23-C.

According to Captain Hazel Tuazon, DCPO spokesperson, the police team conducting “Oplan Hapsay” heard a series of short explosions emanating from the construction site.

Upon investigation, they discovered a group of minors playing with improvised tin can cannons fueled by denatured alcohol.

The minors fled the scene upon noticing the police. However, the officers were able to confiscate eight of these improvised cannons. The seized items are now in the custody of the DCPO for proper disposition.

Recently, city police director Colonel Hansel Marantan issued a directive to strictly enforce Ordinance 060-02, which prohibits firecrackers and pyrotechnics.

“Davao City remains steadfast in its commitment to public safety and environmental preservation by strictly enforcing the ordinance, which prohibits the use, sale, and distribution of firecrackers and pyrotechnics,” he said.

He said the ordinance ensures a peaceful celebration of holidays and special events, safeguarding residents from firecracker-related injuries and reducing environmental risks.

Violators of City Ordinance 060-02 will face the following penalties:

The DCPO chief called on all residents to support and uphold this firecracker ban.

“For 22 years, this long-standing tradition has been instrumental in maintaining peace, safety, and well-being within the community,” he said. “Let us work together to ensure a joyous and injury-free holiday season for everyone.”
