A city councilor said those destroyed firearms seized from rebel groups will be transformed into a peace artwork.
“This will be wonderful,” said Councilor Mabel Acosta. “Firearms that were used in war before will be made as artwork that symbolizes peace for the people of Davao in particular and in the Philippines in general.”
Acosta, the City Council committee chair on Peace and Public Safety, said she has communicated with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Police Regional Office for the proposal.
She said local artist Kublai Millan could make an artwork out of the destroyed firearms.
“I have texted Kublai and he is okay with that,” Acosta said.
Kublai, an artist known for giant sculptures, is behind the giant durian monument at the Davao International Airport, and the giant eagle and the Bagobo children at the People’s Park.
Acosta said Kublai is currently doing a peace artwork at the Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, the headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Quezon City.
“(Kublai) is looking forward for having one here in Davao,” Acosta said. “Hopefully, we can (also) have here in Davao region.”
Last week, the Police Regional Command destroyed 17 firearms that authorities seized from communist rebels.
