‘Gulayan’ top achievers recognized

The City Agriculturist’s Office (CAO) has awarded on Monday some schools and barangays for being the top achievers in their Gulayan sa Eskwelahan (GSE) and Gulayan sa Barangay (GSB) programs.

CAO officer-in-charge Leo Brian Leuterio said 93 barangays participated in the
Gulayan sa Barangay, and another 50 participants for the Gulayan sa Eskwelahan.

Gulayan sa Barangay is a program implemented by CAO as part of introducing organic urban gardening to Davaoeños even with the limited space in their households as it allowed them to grow vegetables and other backyard crops.

Gulayan sa Paaralan, meanwhile, has been implemented city-wide and the program is under the DA’s High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), which aims to serve as an instrument of raising awareness in combating malnutrition among school children and the local communities within.

The Gulayan sa Barangay participants were evaluated by CAO’s agency partners and other private industries such as the Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (VICSMIN), while the Gulayan sa Eskwelahan had been evaluated by personnel from the Department of Education (DepEd) XI.

The winners took home cash prices ranging from P20,000 to 50,000. Consolation prizes meanwhile, amounting to P5,000 were given to those other participants who were not able to win the first three places.

Gulayan sa Barangay was put into two categories, (1) Rural and (2) Urban.

For the Rural Category, Barangay Tamayong, Calinan District took home the 1st prize amounting to P50,000; Barangay Mahayag, Bunawan District got the 2nd prize with P30,000; and Barangay Mandug, Buhangin District on the 3rd place with a P20,000 cash prize.

Consolation prizes were given to barangays Daliaon Plantation, Toril District; Cabantian, Buhangin District; Wines, Baguio District; and Mabuhay, Paquibato District.

For the Urban Category, Barangay Bago Aplaya, Talomo District got the 1st prize of P50,000; 2nd prize of 30,000 for Barangay Cabantian, Buhangin District; and P20,000 cash prize for Barangay Panacan, Bunawan District being the 3rd place.

On the other hand, Gulayan sa Eskwelahan-Elementary Level put Cadalian Elementary School on the 1st place with P50,000 cash prize, San Roque Central Elementary School took the second place with P30,000 in cash, and Mabini Elementary School was third with P20,000.

Consolation prizes of P5,000 were given to Pegdalahan Elementary School, Malabog Central Elementary School, Biao Escuela Elementary School, Binugao Central Elementary School, Ma-a Elementary School, Bunawan Elementary School, Gatungan Elementary School, and Doña Asuncion Hizon Elementary School.

Lastly, for the high school category, Sta. Ana National High School bagged the P50,000 cash prize for placing 1st, Tapak National High School with P30,000 for placing 2nd, and Tacunan National High School in 3rd place with P20,000 cash prize.
