Group raises awareness on Cavendish banana

The group of small Cavendish banana growers is raising awareness on the commodity as it has a higher value in the international market that where it is being sourced.

Gladys M. Garcia, Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association executive director, said that while foreign markets are buying Cavendish bananas at very premium prices, the people in areas where the crop is planted have to be informed about its importance.

“It’s actually the foreign market who patronizes the Cavendish variety. It has a lot of health benefits (as) foreigners consume it, said Garcia during the Wednesdays @ Habi at Kape – Abreeza.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported in December that the Davao Region produced about 904,130 tons of Cavendish banana, 51% of the total Cavendish production in the country, and 37.3% of the total banana production during the period.

In Japan, Philippine Cavendish banana is so popular that it accounted for about 80% of the country’s supply during the first semester of 2018, the report said.

Garcia explained that Cavendish banana is an “aesthetic product” because foreign buyers prefer those without blemishes, but the fruit of those with blemishes is as nutritious and sweet with the one without blemish.

In order to raise awareness among local consumers on the importance and contributions of the Cavendish banana to the economy of the region, the group is holding its second  fun run on April 14  which will culminate at the Panabo Multipurpose and Cultural Center in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.

“If Cavendish industry will be displaced, a lot of people will lose their job and it’s about people’s appreciation. It is good that people will be aware most especially on the contribution of Cavendish industry to the economy of not just in the region but also to the Philippines,” Garcia said.
