THE MEN’S basketball teams of Greece and Canada concurrently dropped from contention in the 2024 Paris Olympic race after they were defeated by Germany and France, respectively.
The Ancient Olympic nation led by Giannis Antetokounmpo was beaten by Germany in the quarterfinals 76-63, despite Antetokounmpo’s 22 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists. Germany was led by Orlando Magic player Franz Wagner who scored 18 points.
Meanwhile, France triumphed 82-73 over Canada sans Rudy Gobert in the starting lineup. Former Boston Celtic Guerschon Yabusele led Les Bleus with 22 points, while Isaïa Cordinier also contributed with 20 points and 3 steals.
NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama anchored the defensive end for France with 3 steals and 1 block to go with his 7 points.
Despite the loss, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put up 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. He was assisted by RJ Barrett who tallied 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Canada and Greece were the game openers of this year’s Olympic men’s basketball tournament.
With their wins, France and Germany move forward to the semifinals and will play head-to-head tomorrow August 8, at 11:30 p.m. PST.
