Local designers are hoping that the textile industry will come into being so they will be able to maximize their profession as at present, the country does not have textile facilities.
They are hoping that in the next 10 years, these facilities will be established, said Emi Englis, secretary of the Davao Fashion and Design Council (DFDC) during the Wednesdays @ Habi at Kape – Abreeza yesterday.
“We truly don’t have a fashion industry yet because we don’t have manufacturing centers, out textile mills are basically in China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia,” said Englis.
He said the fashion designers in the country are just showcasing their work through media.
“That’s why the designers right now are really pushing forward that we will capitalize our culture and heritage as our major platform to create our identity as Davao designers,” he added.
Members of the council have been showcasing local designs from the region to other countries Malaysia, Thailand and other parts of Asia.
One activity of the council is looking for pieces that it present in London in September and that some of these items which will represent the five provinces of the region, will be displayed at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
On May 24-26, the council will hold its Fashion Weekend Davao 2019 at Abreeza Ayala Mall which will showcase works of local designers, including those eight Mindanao designers who are joining the Stellar Competition.
