Fare increase

DAVAO CITY’s jeepney drivers will collect an additional P1 on the P12 minimum fare beginning Sunday, Oct. 8.

This is part of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) central office’s decision to approve the provisional increase on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in response to the successive fuel hikes.

For traditional jeepneys, the fare will be adjusted from P12 to P13, while for modern jeepneys, the fare will be P15. The increase shall only reflect on the first four kilometers and not the succeeding kilometers.

LTFRB chair Teofilo Guadiz III said the implementation is only temporary and no new fare matrixes will be imposed as it will only last until the main petition for permanent increase will be set.

“There were already 11 price increase(s), itong binigay namin ay, pantawid lamang po ito habang nililitis namin ‘yung kanilang kahilingan, which would be the permanent increase,” Guadiz said in a interview posted on the Philippine Daily Inquirer

Pasang Masda, Association of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO), and Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (ALTODAP) initially filed a petition for the P1 provisional increase to address the effects of fuel price hikes. The group’s proposed P5 fare hike (and P1 per succeeding kilometer) is still being reviewed by the LTFRB.

Guadiz said the agency is taking into account the financial burden it will add to the commuting public and the inflation in the country.

In October last year, the LTFRB also adjusted the minimum fare for traditional public utility jeepneys from P11 to P12.
