Duterte’s ICC legal team takes shape, counsel calls for his return

NICHOLAS Kaufman, the British-Israeli lead counsel of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC), provided updates on the legal team.

He also reiterated his belief that Duterte is being illegally detained that he should return to the Philippines as soon as possible.

Kaufman anticipated finalizing the list of Duterte’s legal counsel by the end of the week.

He also expressed openness to Filipino lawyers joining the team. “I’m always welcome with Filipinos, and I anticipated there will be Filipinos in due course as well,” Kaufman stated in an interview.

Furthermore, Kaufman asserted that Duterte’s detention in The Hague is unlawful and that he should be allowed to return to the Philippines.

“As far as I’m concerned he’s being illegally detained here and he should go back to the Philippines,” Kaufman told national media.
