Duterte signs order to close roads for 3 Ironman events

THE CITY government will temporarily close certain roads for the safety and success of the upcoming Irongirls, Ironkids, and Alveo Ironman 70.3 Davao Powered by Petron triathlon events from March 24-26.

Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte signed Executive Order (EO) No. 7 Series of 2023 on March 14, 2023, effectively closing the Davao City-Panabo City road from the intersection of J.P. Laurel Avenue and R. Castillo St. up to the boundary of Davao City and Panabo City (Lasang), and the northbound lane from the corner of J.P. Laurel Avenue and R. Castillo St. up to F. Torres St. and R. Castillo St. on various dates.

The triathlon events are part of the city’s sports development and tourism promotions, showcasing its “scenic sights, hospitable people, and abundant culture to the world.”

The road closure will be implemented in phases, depending on the schedule of the events.

For the Irongirls on March 24, the northbound lane of R. Castillo St. will be closed from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., while the southbound lane will remain open for two-way traffic.

Meanwhile, for the March 25 Ironkids, the northbound lane of R. Castillo St. will be closed from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., while the southbound lane will be utilized for two-way traffic.

The closure for the IRONMAN 70.3 event on March 26 will be implemented for the bike and run courses.

The southbound lane will be closed from Azuela Cove to Lasang (to Panabo-Tagum) from 3 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for the bike course, and the northbound lane will be closed from Azuela Cove to Lasang from 3 a.m. to 12:30 PM.

The northbound lane going to Lanang from corner J.P. Laurel Ave./F. Torres St., to Azuela Cove (J.P. Laurel Ave./ R. Castillo Jct.), will also be closed from 3 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the run course.

The southbound lane going downtown will be open for two-way traffic.

Individuals impacted by road closures are encouraged to carefully plan their travel and consider alternative routes or adjust their schedules accordingly. Local government officials suggest taking necessary precautions to avoid any inconvenience or disruption during the temporary closure of the affected roads.

All national and local government offices located in Davao City are also urged to extend their full support and cooperation to ensure the success of the forthcoming events.

The collective effort of the public and private sectors is necessary to guarantee the smooth implementation of the temporary road closures, which are deemed essential to facilitate the upcoming sporting events and showcase Davao City’s tourism potential.
