DTI-assisted meat processing coop succeeds despite ASF challenges

B.E. DUJALI, Davao del Norte—A cooperative engaged in meat processing has proven that it can still thrive despite challenges if it continues to embrace commitment and optimism.
The Dujali Free Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (DUFFAMCO) marked a significant milestone with the signing of the Deed of Donation on October 14. With DUFFAMCO now generating an additional Php36,000 in monthly sales, the meat processing project has brought about tangible economic benefits further strengthening the cooperative’s financial stability. Moreover, two new jobs were created as a direct result of the meat processing operations, providing valuable employment opportunities for local residents and boosting the community’s economy. This achievement was made possible through the Department of Trade and Industry’s Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (DTI-CARP) and its Shared Service Facility (SSF) Project, which provided DUFFAMCO with the essential tools and training to excel in the meat processing industry.
Despite the challenges brought by the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, DUFFAMCO remained resolute in its mission. Through the DTI CARP and  SSF Project, DUFFAMCO was able to operate its meat processing facility under a two-year Usufruct Agreement, extended by an additional year due to ASF concerns.
A key factor in the success of this project was the involvement of Meatshop ng Bayan, a meat retailing establishment with a training center that enhances butchery deboning skills. Led by CEO Aben E. Auman as the resource person and mentor, Meatshop ng Bayan conducted an intensive training session for DUFFAMCO members from June 24 to 25. The training, which DTI Davao del Norte initiated, focused on essential meat processing techniques such as meat cutting and deboning, equipping cooperative members with the skills needed for efficient production.
In addition to the technical training, Meatshop ng Bayan shared critical insights on managing and operating a meat shop business, ensuring DUFFAMCO was well-prepared for its grand opening. This comprehensive mentorship played a pivotal role in the cooperative’s smooth entry into the meat processing industry.
DUFFAMCO, an agricultural cooperative established in 1995, has long supported its members by engaging in the buying and selling of agricultural products. The opening of their meat shop represents a major step forward in diversifying their operations and providing high-quality meat products to the local community.
During the opening of the Meat Shop ng Bayan, DUFFAMCO chairperson Leonardo Lozarita, Jr. shared about their commitment to improving their status.
Determinado mi tungod nakita namo ang effort sa ahensya sa DTI para matabangan mi (We are determined because DTI’s efforts to help us),” he said.
For her part, DTI Davao de Norte OIC provincial director Zerline T. Balleque said that the success story of DUFFAMCO highlights the power of DTI’s CARP and SSF initiatives in driving economic development for agrarian reform beneficiaries. In the meantime, DUFFAMCO’s ability to generate Php36,000 in additional monthly sales and create two new jobs stands as a testament to the transformative impact of these programs.
With the official turnover of the meat processing SSF on October 14, DUFFAMCO is well-positioned to continue its growth and provide lasting benefits to the people of Braulio E. Dujali.
