THE DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) recently concluded a three-day Business Ideation Training designed to help participants from the academe and overseas Filipino worker (OFW) communities develop technology-based business ideas that support local economic growth.
Held under DOST XI’s TECHGROW and iFWD PH Programs, the training provided participants with hands-on experience in turning innovative concepts into practical and sustainable business models. Mr. Richard Day, president of Upgrade Innolab and executive director of E3 Philippines, served as the resource speaker, guiding participants through key stages of the business ideation process. These included identifying user needs, developing clear problem statements, generating creative solutions, and creating simple prototypes.
The TECHGROW Program supports higher education and research institutions in bringing their technologies to market, while the iFWD PH Program helps returning OFWs and their families start technology-based enterprises as a reintegration strategy.
Participants learned tools such as design thinking and the Value Proposition Canvas, which helped them define customer segments and match their product or service ideas to real-world needs. The sessions were designed to build entrepreneurial confidence and encourage collaboration.
According to DOST XI regional director Dr. Anthony C. Sales, the training highlights the agency’s commitment to inclusive development.
“When we support innovation and entrepreneurship at the community level, we create real impact. We help people turn ideas into solutions that matter,” he said.
DOST XI expressed gratitude to all participants and encouraged them to continue refining their ideas and exploring ways to bring these solutions to life. Through initiatives like this, DOST XI continues to support the growth of local enterprises that can contribute to community development and regional progress.
