THE DEPARTMENT of Natural Resources in the region on May 16 solicited the support of Davao City lawmakers in the bid to declare Mt. Apo Natural Park as a geological monument.
As the highest mountain in the Philippines, Mt. Apo holds qualities considered valuable for conservation and protection.
DENR XI regional executive director Bagani Fidel Evasco listed five reasons why Mt. Apo Natural Park should be declared a geological monument: (1) its rich geological history, (2) a biodiversity hotspot, having cultural and spiritual significance, (4) its scenic beauty, and (5) it offers geological education.
“Mt. Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines, is a natural wonder that boasts a diverse range of geological features and is considered a treasure trove of scientific, educational, and cultural value,” Evasco said.
The declaration will not only protect the natural resources in the area but also promotes research and education. It will contribute to the city’s cultural, economic, and educational aspects.
Among the country’s geological monuments include the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Hundred Islands in Pangasinan, Sand Dunes in Ilocos Norte, Taal Volcano in Batangas, and St. Paul Limestone Formation in Palawan.
“The department is now in the position of the inscription for the UNESCO Global Geopark of Mt. Apo Natural Park that is composed of three cities and four municipalities, including Davao City, Digos City, City of Kidapawan, Sta. Cruz, Bansalan, Makilala, and Magpet,” he added.
