DCPO: Bonifacio Day rally, commemoration peaceful

AROUND 200 members of various progressive groups staged a rally on Saturday, November 30, at Freedom Park on Roxas Avenue to commemorate the 161st birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio.

Despite the rally, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that the activity ended with no incident.

DCPO spokesperson Captain Hazel Tuazon confirmed the rally was organized by labor union members from the Pepsi Cola Employees Workers Union (PEWU), Holcim Philippines Employees Union (HPEU), and Mincorr Independent Workers Union (MIWU), all under the Sentro Labor Union Federation and DAHEU.

The groups advocated for issues such as wage increases, legislation for higher minimum wage (Php150 and above), an end to contractualization, and lowering the prices of basic commodities.

The rally concluded peacefully around 5 pm.

The city also held a separate commemoration with the theme “Pagkakaisang Pilipino: Pundasyon ng Malaya at Maunlad na Bayan” at the Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Monument on CM Recto Avenue in Poblacion.

Vice Mayor Jay Melchor Quitain Jr. led the city’s official event.

The DCPO deployed 185 personnel to secure both the Freedom Park rally and the official commemoration.
