Davao’s banana pioneer receives prestigious Japanese order

HIKARU “Mickey” Miyake, a pioneering figure in the banana export industry and a cornerstone of the Japanese community in Davao, was honored with the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays on Wednesday evening, Aug. 7.

The prestigious Japanese award recognizes his significant contributions to strengthening ties between Japan and the Philippines.

The conferment ceremony, held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel, was hosted by the consul general of Japan in Davao, Yoshihisa Ishikawa, and attended by Miyake’s family, friends, and representatives from various Japan-related organizations in Mindanao.

Miyake, who migrated to Davao in 1971, played a pivotal role in establishing the region’s banana export industry, primarily to Japan. 

Over the years, he has served as president of the Davao Japanese Association for a total of 22 years and contributed significantly to the establishment of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Mindanao. 

His leadership and advocacy have improved the welfare of both the Filipino and Japanese communities in Davao.

Consul General Ishikawa praised Miyake’s entrepreneurial spirit, resilience, and dedication to fostering goodwill between the two nations. 

He highlighted Miyake’s remarkable life story, filled with challenges and triumphs, as an inspiration to all.

In his acceptance speech, a deeply honored Miyake expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reiterated his commitment to further strengthening the bonds between Japan and the Philippines.

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you, especially Consul General Ishikawa, thank you so much for sacrificing time for preparation and to make this special ceremony possible,” he said.

The Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays, is awarded by the Japanese government to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in various fields, including international relations, the promotion of Japanese culture, and advancements in their respective fields.
