NO DRIVERS in Davao City participated in the three-day nationwide transport strike starting on Monday, Nov. 20.
However, at least 15 individuals belonging to progressive groups staged a protest at Freedom Park to voice their opposition against the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program.
Major Marvin Hugos, commander of San Pedro Police Station, said the protest rally was also related to the nationwide transport strike conducted by the transport groups, particularly in NCR.
Hugos said the protesting individuals belonged to Transmission-Piston group, together with Anakbayan, KMU-Southern Mindanao Region (SMR), and Kabataan Party-List-Southern Mindanao Region.
Accordingly, the group demanded that the Marcos administration nix its plan to phase out jeepneys, reject the omnibus franchising guidelines, and for the government to provide financial support to the drivers and small operators.
He said the rally ended at 11:40 a.m. without an incident.
In a separate interview, Nonito Llanos III, Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board regional director, confirmed that they monitored zero public utilize vehicles that joined the simultaneous protest action.
“Walay nag join sa ilang transport strike,” Llanos said.
In Manila, the transport strike spearheaded by Piston began Monday, Nov. 20, to protest the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program.
