Davao City has vibrant creative industry, local artist says

Winning entries from young artists in the DOE’s poster making contest on energy efficiency and conservation are on display.

THE SERIES of local art exhibitions and creative events indicate a vibrant creative industry in Davao City.

“It signifies that there is a leading creative industry in Davao and that the artists are really improving. As long as we’re having these kinds of exhibitions phases and art events, artists will constantly do their work, unlike before that you’re (artists) going to wait months or weeks for an exhibit,” said Wilfred Dexter Tañedo, La Herencia’s property manager and art coordinator.

He said the series of exhibits also aligns with establishing the foundations of the Philippine Creative Industries, during the recent Creative Industry Summit through the Department of Trade and Industry, wherein La Herencia pushes and aims for more visual arts and galleries.

Tañedo mentioned there are four major events that are related to the creative industry, such as creative product launchings, pop culture merchandise event, Davao Art Collective featuring fashion and obscure artists and local designers in November, and the LAVA (Literary and Visual Art Fest) in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines in February 2024.

“We’ve actually been exhibiting two exhibits, now three exhibits every month, and we’re fully booked for 2024,” he added.

Regarding art galleries, Tañedo also shared that they also opt to bring in more art galleries as one of the members of the National Commission for Art Gallery, an opportunity to bring in more artists from all over the Philippines to visit creatives in Davao.

He also encouraged artists to be around during art events and exhibits, to establish connections with art buyers.

“We encourage our local creatives and artists to be around during exhibitions so that buyers will want to connect with them,” he said.
