DAVAO City-based Madayaw Dance Ensemble impressed the judges with a stunning performance to emerge as the adult division champion of the recently concluded 86th Araw ng Dabaw Sayaw Pinoy Folk Dance Competition held at the SM City Events Center.
The Terpsichorean Performing Group of Digos City settled for runner-up honors, while the Bernardo Carpio National High School – Alumni placed third.
In the junior category, Davao City National High School’s Sining Sayon Dawet captured the title, outshining Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) and Notre Dame of Midsayap, which finished second and third, respectively.
Meanwhile, the children’s title went to Magallanes Elementary School, while the Matina Aplaya Elementary School came second, followed by Lapu-Lapu Elementary School in third.
The champion dance teams in each category received P25,000, the second placers claimed P15,000, and the third placers took home P15,000.
Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, in his message, thanked the judges, participants, parents, teachers, principals, SM City Davao, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for their support in ensuring the success of the activity.
“Nalipay mi sa overwhelming na pagdawat sa Sayaw Pinoy folk dance (We are happy with the overwhelming reception for the Sayaw Pinoy folk dance),” Alejandre said. “Si Mayor Baste gusto kaayo niya ning arts and culture, hapit na mahimo ang opisina para matutukan gyud ni (Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte is very supportive of arts and culture. Soon we will have an office to specifically focus on this).”
Entries in the children’s event performed lively mimic dances while the junior contenders showcased rural and skill dances. Spanish-influenced dances were highlighted in the adult competition.
