Dav de Oro ratification set last quarter of 2019

The ratification for the renaming of Compostela Valley into Davao de Oro will happen in the last quarter of 2019, Governor Tyron Uy said.

“The people can expect that this November or December we will be conducting a plebiscite for the changing of name for our province as a result of the signed law by President Duterte, the Davao de Oro Bill,” Uy said during sidelines of the signing of MOA for the rehabilitation of Naboc River last week.

Republic Act 11297 – the act renaming the province of Compostela Valley as the Province of Davao de Oro – was signed last April 17 and was published on May 22. The province is the richest gold-producing region in the country, which explains the name.

Oro is a Spanish term for gold. But it could also be derived from the Greek word, óros, which means mountain.

Compostela Valley was part of the of Davao del Norte before it split by virtue of the Republic Act No. 8470 signed by then President Fidel Ramos in 1998.

“We expect, of course, it will be easier to recognize the province for the tourists and investors. We know that Compostela Valley has great potential because we have a lot of agricultural areas,” Uy added.

Uy encouraged qualified voters of Compostela Valley to participate in the upcoming plebiscite and to vote for yes in favor of renaming the province to Davao de Oro.
