DATA partners with int’l experts to create eco-tourism roadmap

THE DAVAO Tourism Association (DATA) and the Programma Uitzending Managers (PUM) Netherlands will conduct a three-day tourism sustainability roadmap to further encourage eco-conscious and sustainable branding for hotels and destinations in Davao Region.

During the PEP Talks forum on Feb. 13, Liza Gamo, DATA representative, said the flagship project of the organization aims “to expand the impact of sustainable practices across the tourism sector.”

Gamo said the initiative is also aligned with DATA’s 50th-anniversary celebration, advocating hotels and other establishments, especially its members in Davao Region to transition into green practices.

“This would also help us move up to a better way on how we can preserve our environment, resources, and the beautiful spots we have here in Davao Region,” Gamo said.

The three-day workshop on Feb. 20-22 will discuss further the challenges encountered by establishments, more understanding of tourism sustainable practices, and advice and suggestions will be given by the PUM Netherlands’ experts.

Before this, Gamo said they have also been slowly practicing green practices in their hotels through their accommodations and amenities. Some of these were serving guests refreshments through water carafes instead of water bottles, water dispensers on each establishment floor, and utilizing organic/paper straws.

“We have also installed a social responsibility corner where guests are informed what are our sustainable practices because the only way for hotels to continue doing their operations is to adopt these practices especially here in Davao City,” she added.

The PUM Netherlands is a non-profit organization consisting of 145 senior experts who provide their expertise to businesses in 36 developing countries in terms of sustainable practices.
