DA XI kicks off Farmers’ Month 2024

THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA) XI kicked off “Buwan ng Magsasaka at Mangingisda 2024” at the agency’s compound in Davao City on May 6, with a lineup of various activities to honor farmers and fisherfolks in the Davao Region. 

During the opening ceremony, DA XI executive regional director Epifanio Loyola Jr. acknowledged farmers and fisherfolk for their continuous effort for food security in the region and urged the public to dedicate the month of May to them. 

“We have to give this month to our farmers and fisherfolk and extend our utmost support to them. We wouldn’t have anything to eat without them,” Loyola said. 

Presidential Assistant for Eastern Mindanao Leo Tereso Magno who also graced the event said in his statement how significant the private sector is in boosting the country’s agricultural industry. 

“I’d like to build a strong partnership with the private sector and through your leaders. Let us talk, find a common ground to address your needs,” Magno said. 

The event showcased exhibitions and booths from various agricultural commodities and products from different commodities and associations in the Davao Region. 

The program will feature discussions and activities such as the revival of the floriculture industry, a seminar on African Swine Fever under the Livestock program, bonsai making and urban gardening, distributions of vegetable seeds, corn production technology, and product promotion,  and a lecture on organic agriculture technologies. 

For the third week, lectures and seminars on the Animal Welfare Act will be conducted, and lectures on wildlife’s importance in the ecosystem will be held at Davao Crocodile Park and Zoo, training on Philippine Good Agricultural Practice for Rice, among others. 

DA XI also urged the public to participate and engage in the events as they are all free of charge.
