A city councilor proposed an ordinance that will requires all schools in the city to teach primary and secondary students on traffic regulations and public safety.
Teaching the children early with the rules and regulations will help them appreciate the concepts better.
“At the same time, they can enjoy the topic because it is an issue they can understand and that affects them almost every day,” Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta said.
Acosta added that teaching the traffic rules to young people will make it normal for them, and shape their understanding of road regulations and safety measures.
The councilor also cited that a similar curriculum was already developed and is currently implemented, through the joint efforts of the Land Transportation Office and Department of Education in Region 5.
“There is already a template of the lesson plan, and the lessons are presented in a fun and educational manner,” said Acosta, adding that “our proposed ordinance in Davao, will adopt a similar curriculum, but this time it will include public safety lessons as well. Not limited to earthquake and fire drills alone, but focus on prevention measures as well, in case of fire or other man made incidents.”
This item was passed on first reading last May 29 and was referred to the committee on peace and order and public safety.
