The City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) is now collecting parking fees in selected areas of the city’s central business districts.
Since Jan. 2, fee collectors are detailed in major streets in the Poblacion District.
CTTMO head Dionisio Abude said that CTTMO and the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO) employees are deployed in the designated areas from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The designated parking fee areas are CM Recto to Bolton, Bolton to Engineer’s Drive, Engineer’s Drive to City Hall Drive, City Hall Drive to Inigo, Inigo to Quirino, San Pedro to Duterte, Duterte to Luna, Luna to Pelayo, A. Pichon to San Pedro, San Pedro to Rizal/Duterte, Rizal to Bonifacio, Ilustre to Pelayo, Guerrero to Chavez, Chavez to Suazo, Suazo to Sales, Sales to Gempesaw, Gempesaw to Lizada, Lizada to Bangoy, Bangoy to Alvarez and JP Laurel to Guerrero.
Last year, the CTTMO announced that the pay parking collection will be implemented in the first week of January. Abude said this is the first time that City Ordinance 052, series of 2013, is implemented since it was approved seven years aho.
City Ordinance 052-2013 imposes parking fees on all vehicle owners/drivers for using certain streets in the city as parking spaces and for other purposes. Its implementation will generate additional income for the city, which can be used for various projects.
“This (pay parking zone) is to be implemented so that people who wanted to park in the identified areas may be given a chance one after another,” he said, pointing out that collecting fees in the areas will give equal opportunity for car owners to use the designated parking zones.
He said that based on observation, many drivers tend to park for several hours in some parking areas, leaving no chance for other motorists and car owners to park.
“At least if we will let them pay, everyone will have an equal opportunity to park their vehicles. Also, it will be safer since there will be a CTTMO officer who will make sure that their cars are safe,” he said.
CTO head Lawrence Bantiding said that 14 ticket checkers are deployed everyday from their office to collect parking fees.
“Our personnel, together with personnel of CTTMO, will be there from Monday to Saturday. The CTTMO will be there to assist our ticket checkers for the implementation of the ordinance,” he said.
He said that they are expecting to generate P54,000 collection from the parking fees.
“We will make an account code for this and it will be added to our general fund,” he said.
Each street is provided with mark, signage and racks as indicators to which areas are for parking.
