Councilors must author landmark law each: VM

Acting City Mayor Sebastian Duterte said each councilor should pass at least one landmark ordinance during their three-year term.

“During the campaign, we have 24 landmark ordinances that we commend to the people,” Duterte said on Friday during the sidelines of the city-wide shake-out drill at Crocodile Park in Barangay Ma-a, Talomo District.

“That is what we are doing right now, our 24 councilors are still preparing,” he added.

In previous councils, some lawmakers ended their term without passing a single ordinance.

During the first regular session of the 19th council last month, Duterte enjoined the then newly elected councilors to “enact 24 landmark ordinances to pursue the priority agenda of both the national and local government.”

Through this, Davao City will uphold its reputation for crafting pioneering laws that can be recognized and adopted nationally.

Speaking during the City Council media briefing on Wednesday, Dayanghirang explained that the move of Duterte is to ensure all councilors are really working in their respective committees.

He said all 24 councilors are conforming to Duterte’s proposal adding that they are “obliged to follow it or else it would reflect that we are not doing our job.”

“We really appreciate it and as far as I’m concerned, I’m doing my job. I don’t know about those who are not filing their ordinances yet,” Dayanghirang said.

Just this year, he said he already passed six ordinances.
