A City Councilor is proposing for a Davao City Invention and Innovation Promotions Center Ordinance to support local inventors.
Councilor Pilar Braga, chair of the committee on education, science and technology, arts and culture, said the proposal is necessary as “our scientists were given very little support from the government.”
In her speech last Tuesday, Braga cited some Filipino inventors including the moon rover that first roamed the ground of the moon in the 1970s; Engr. Flores, a Filipino inventor, and the paper used by the Japanese yen which was invented by Arturo Gorrez.
“Our scientists here are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad due to lack of support from the government,” Braga said.
In the city, Braga said it “has all the aces in terms of research facilities.”
“The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region-XI, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Region-XI and Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Region XI, on the last week of September, rolled out three business incubators located in University of the Philippines Mindanao, University of Mindanao and the University of Southeastern Philippines The Philippine Genome Center, a massively funded research project also has their Mindanao satellite facility in UP-Mindanao.
The proposed ordinance, Braga said, is to maximize the use of research facilities in the city.
