TWO FAST food chains will sign a memorandum of agreement with the city government to hire senior citizens, a lawmaker announced on Tuesday.
To recall, Diosdado Angelo Mahipus Jr., proposed the measure on Oct. 10, 2023, through a privilege speech in the city council.
“Next week, the committee is also reviewing the senior citizen work opportunity program of the city, and two fast food chains have committed to hiring senior citizens,” Mahipus said during Aprubado sa Konseho on July 9.
The MOA is currently pending in the legal office for legal opinion.
Employees will be pulled out to brief the hired senior citizens on the workflow.
“Sama sa laing nasud kung kusgan paka, kung kaya pa nimo, tagaan kag opportunity bisan senior citizen na ka,” Mahipus said.
Mahipus said the workload for the elderly will not be heavy as it only includes taking table orders, serving food and beverages, and guest relations.
The councilor, however, did not disclose the names of the companies.
Mahipus reiterated his call for other private companies to accept senior citizens as part of their workforce.
Along with the creation of policy, Mahipus said they are mulling providing appropriate incentives to private sector partners who will hire the elderly.
He shared this is one of the advocacy of the city mayor to empower the senior citizens to contribute to the city’s economy and generate income for themselves if need be.
The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCI) earlier expressed their support for the councilor’s proposal.
However, the chance of employing the elderly largely depends on matching their skills with the needs of private companies.
“We would like to help the senior citizens, but still, that would depend on the competencies that specific organization requires,” DCCCI president Belinda Torres said.
