Comelec XI surprised by huge turnout of aspirants in the city

THE COMELEC offices in Magsaysay Park continue to accommodate a throng of aspirants for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on Oct. 30.

During the iSpeak media forum on Aug. 31, Atty. Gay Enumerables, Comelec XI assistant regional director said they were surprised by the number of turnouts applying for their certificates of candidacy (COCs).

“Everyday is like a registration day, especially here in Davao City. Although we expected a lot of aspirants going to our offices. But for Davao City, parang na-shock kami sa dami nang nag file (we were quite shocked by the sheer number of filers),” Enumerables said.

From first to third day, Davao City has a total of 297 candidates filed for the position of punong barangay, 2,798 for barangay councilors, 257 for SK chairpersons, and 1,309 for barangay kagawad.

Based on their records, the Comelec has not yet rejected any COC application.

“There are only three instances that we’re not going to accept it. The first one is based on our records, you are not a registered voter of the barangay that you intend to run. The second one is for SK na 18-24 years old na age requirement on election day, and the third one is if madaming kulang na requirement sa forms niyo,” Enumerables added.

Enumerables stressed that the office hopes aspirants would be more patient during the registration as Comelec workers are trying their best to process the COCs properly.

She also clarified that there will be no extension of registrations after the filing deadline on Sept. 2.
