MAYOR Sebastian Duterte led the 21st commemoration of the Sasa Wharf bombing on Tuesday afternoon and urged Davaoeños to embrace a “culture of security” to prevent similar tragedies.
The attack on April 2, 2024, left 17 people dead and 56 injured.
“Davao City government remains committed to supporting the victims and their families,” Duterte said. “We will continue to monitor their needs and provide assistance throughout their healing process.”
He emphasized the city’s strength and resilience, saying, “We will not be cowed by violence. We stand united in our pursuit of peace and justice. We will always be there for you, not just in times of celebration, but also in times of hardship.”
The mayor expressed gratitude to law enforcement and social workers. “We are deeply grateful to the police officers, soldiers, and the City Social Welfare and Development Office for their crucial roles,” he said. “Their bravery and dedication in the aftermath of the bombing, and their ongoing efforts to assist victims and survivors, are truly commendable.”
CSWDO provides educational support
In a separate interview, City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) head Julie Dayaday reported that 15 dependents of the victims and survivors have graduated from college under the education assistance program.
“One of the graduates is currently employed at our office as a registered social worker,” Dayaday said. “The City, through CSWDO, continues to provide various forms of assistance to ensure the well-being of the survivors and dependents.”
Davao City Police Office Director Colonel Richard Bad-ang, Task Force Davao commander Colonel Darren Comia, and Public Safety and Security Office Head Angel Sumagaysay also attended the commemoration.
