City Council proposes March 1 as special non-working holiday

A LAWMAKER endorsed a resolution to the Sangguniang Panlungsod requesting Malacañang to declare March 1 a special non-working holiday.

Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, the committee on tourism and beautification chair, proposed the resolution under suspended rules during the regular session on Jan. 30.

The councilor said the measure would allow Davao City to mark the celebration of the 87th Araw ng Dabaw.

Republic Act No. 11379, signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte in 2019, repealed Republic Act 7551 and 7685 and officially moved Araw ng Dabaw from March 16 to March 1. The law further declared March 1 a special working holiday in the city.

However, as the resolution proposed by the councilor states, “To ensure that there will be a festive and memorable celebration of the city of Davao,” the council is asked to request OVP to declare March 1 a special non-working holiday.

“The remedy is we will apply every year, asking the Malacañang to grant us, to allow that it be a non-working holiday,” Alejandre said during the sideline interview.

The councilor said the line of events on the celebration is still underway and finalized this week.
