The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) reported it is going to open more slots for tertiary education subsidy grants next year.
“We have 300,000 tertiary education subsidy grants to students this year. Next year, we will increase it to 400,000 subsidy grantees,” CHED Chair Prospero de Vera III said.
De Vera noted that the fund for subsidies is higher during this administration.
“What is important is that the level of funding to financial assistance to students is highest under this administration,” De Vera said.
Under the financial grants to students under public universities, de Vera said there are now 1.3 million students free in tuition and miscellaneous fees in 190 public universities.
De Vera also reported they have two major types of scholarships, the need-based scholarship that is based on the financial need of students and the merit-based scholarship that is based on the academic performance of the student.
De Vera further reported they have allotted a billion peso budget for a recently launched student loan program.
“These are loans they can get while they are still students and if they pay the loan within the school year, they will have no interest. This is already available to universities to implement to their students,” De Vera said.
