THE CANADIAN Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines and Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) will conduct a forum discussing the future mining industry in the Philippines, to be held at the campus on Aug. 2.
In a statement, Julian Payne, Canadian Chamber president, said the forum will discuss where and how mining could be developed in an “environmentally and socially responsible form.”
“Metals are essential inputs for both economic and social development, with metallic mining somewhere and somehow imperative to supply metals,” Payne said.
Payne said they will be in dialogue with the environmentalists, indigenous people, religious leaders, the government, mining industries, and other major stakeholders for the event.
“For a constructive dialogue to be successful, it is important to understand and respect the visions that the various stakeholders have for future mining. Our objective in convening this event is to provide a forum for shareholders to articulate and share their visions to advance a constructive dialogue,” he added.
Br. Noelvic Deloria, Holy Cross Davao College president, said that as an academic institution, they also encourage significant discussion of major issues that the country currently faces.
“Where and how to develop metallic mining in the Philippines in the future is one such issue. In hosting this event on future mining, we recognize that the various stakeholders do have differing visions. The articulation of these different visions will enable us as an academic institution and all other participants to learn from and draw on the experience and knowledge that each of the stakeholders has about mining,” Deloria added.
