Beaches desolate on Easter Sunday

The city’s beaches were empty during Easter Sunday, but eight minors were caught swimming by the joint forces of the Navy and Coast Guard on Black Saturday.

Also, three adults were also apprehended for violating the 24/7 liquor ban.

Commodore Antonio Palces, the commander of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM), said that based on their patrols, they have not received any reports of families who went to the beach yesterday.

“No monitored swimming activities,” Palces said, adding that the village volunteer security forces have been warning individuals against going to the beach.

However, Commodore Roy Echeverria, the commander of Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao, said they caught eight minors swimming, and they were subsequently turned over to the Sasa Police Station station.

Also, Echeverria said the three who violated the liquor ban were also endorsed to the same police station.

“On Sunday, our troops have not caught anybody,” he added. “It seems everybody has behaved.”

But as of this writing, Echeverria said they have received a report that there were people having a drinking session in Balet, Samal.

“The personnel is already there but no feedback yet, ” he added.

Also, Davao Coast Guard Station commander Garry Laynesa said they are monitoring the private resorts and have turned up nothing.

“After going to all private resorts within Davao City, they are also closed,” Laynesa said.

In Davao City, the Coast Guard Station Davao is covering nine private beach resorts and five public resorts.

The Coast Guard and NFEM have intensified the patrols along the coastlines of Davao Gulf to help monitor the violators of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). Authorities will help make sure that crowds do not gather at the beach to ensure physical distancing.

Recently, the Regional Task Force COVID-19 issued Resolution 13 requesting the PCG and Navy to regularly patrol the coastlines.

The Coast Guard has deployed one ship in Ocean View Samal and its main ship is docked at DPWH-Panacan while the other three are in Daliao fish port in Toril. The maritime patrols conducted by their ships are 24/7.
