Barangay chair aspirant slain, another hurt in ambush

A PUNONG barangay aspirant in Camantangan, Montevista, Davao de Oro was killed and a candidate for councilor was wounded after they were shot by unidentified perpetrators around 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Major Gerald Borja, chief of Montevista Municipal Police Station, identified the victim as Alvin Bengil Garcia, 32, a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Camantangan, Montevista, Davao de Oro.

The victim and barangay kagawad aspirant Jocelyn Montaño Agron, 50, married, resident of Purok 4 had just finished campaigning in one of the barangays.

The victim was driving his Honda XR200 motorcycle with Agron as a passenger on the way to Barangay Camantangan when they were waylaid by two unidentified perpetrators reportedly riding a blue Honda XRM without a plate.

The back rider pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the head, who then lost control of the motorcycle and crashed it on the road.  

The perpetrators fled toward the direction of Barangay Canidkid.

The victims were brought to the Davao de Oro Provincial Hospital in Montevista but Garcia did not make it. Agron, who sustained injuries in the crash, is already out of danger.

Investigation revealed that the victim had an intimate relationship with a married woman and his lone opponent for the position of barangay chairman is his own aunt.
